Markus Kayser - Solar Sinter
Markus Kayser's MA 2011 project developed at the Royal College of Art explores the potential of desert manufacturing. In a world where energy is being consumed faster than it can be replenished and where raw materials are running low, Kayser has looked at the desert for inspiration. The desert is a natural source where energy and material are in abundance. B By using the heat from the sun and the sand on the ground, he manages to form beautiful glass objects. It is absolutely breathtaking watching nature take its course and merge these two natural elements together. With only the help of a 3-D printing machine and the raw materials of sunlight and sand, this energy and material combines to form a spectacular product.
Not only does it make use of the world's most efficient energy source - the sun, but it also targets problems in the world with manufacturing and supply and demand. In the future if we use the sun as a major energy resource then we ought not to run out of all the world's material e.g. fossil fuels.
I also remember watching an episode of Top Gear where they manage to get a car to run via sunlight due to the solar panels on its roof. Although solar energy is perhaps not as useful in British climates I feel that in Dubai and completely man-made environments they ought to make use of the powerful sun rays in order to stop consuming all the world's vital materials.
